What a month in Jakarta costs

Jakarta is Indonesia's expensive city, not its cheap beach life. Rent is the reason: a decent one-bed in the south or the business core runs higher than Bali or most of the country. What you get back is a real capital, with malls, offices and a fast-growing metro.

Eating covers a huge range. A warteg plate is a dollar or two, while the cafes and restaurants in Kemang or SCBD are priced like a mid-size Western city. A specialty coffee is around $3, so the cafe habit is what quietly adds up.

Nobody rents a scooter here the way they do in Bali; you get around on the MRT, TransJakarta and Gojek or Grab. The calculator budgets that instead of a bike. Set your lifestyle, household size and neighborhood below, and the total updates.

Rent in Jakarta by area

Rent moves the total more than anything else, and Jakarta's areas vary a lot. These run from pricier to cheaper than the city average, using our own estimates from local listings:

  • SCBD / Sudirman Pricier The SCBD and Sudirman corridor is Jakarta's financial center, with the newest towers and the highest rents. You pay for being on top of the offices and the MRT.
  • Menteng Pricier Menteng is the historic prestige district, tree-lined and central near the embassies. Rents run well above average for the address and the calm.
  • Kemang Mid Kemang is the long-standing expat hub in the south, full of cafes, bars and international schools. Rents are a little above the city average, and traffic in and out can be slow.
  • Kebayoran Baru Mid Kebayoran Baru is a settled, well-located southern area near the MRT line, with rents around the city average. A common pick for central-south without Kemang prices.
  • Kelapa Gading Cheaper Kelapa Gading in the north is a self-contained mall-and-condo district with lower rents. Handy if you do not need to be in the southern cafe scene.
  • Tebet / East Cheaper Tebet and the eastern areas are more local, with some hip cafe pockets and the cheapest rents here. You trade the prime-south address for real value.

Is Jakarta expensive?

Jakarta is cheap for local food, transport and help, and closer to home prices for apartments in the prime districts, imported goods and cafe dining. Most of the extra spending is rent, cafes and mall life rather than day-to-day basics.

A comfortable month costs less than a mid-size Western city, but Jakarta is pricier than most of Indonesia. It runs above Bali on rent and well above cities like Yogyakarta, which the Indonesia cost of living page lays out.

Sending money to Jakarta

If you earn abroad, you are converting to rupiah, where the numbers get large: rent is in the millions and a coffee is tens of thousands. A weak rate plus a transfer fee can cost 3 to 5% each time, which matters more the more you send.

Landlords often want six or twelve months up front here, by bank transfer, so a cheap way to move a lump sum matters. Check what you would receive today, then the full Indonesia money guide covers ATMs, cards and QRIS.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How much do you need per month to live in Jakarta?

For one person, plan on about $820 for a basic setup, $1,780 for a comfortable digital-nomad month with a one-bed and coworking, and $3,120 for a CBD-apartment-and-car lifestyle. Set your own household size, neighborhood and currency in the calculator above.

  • Can you live in Jakarta on $1,000 a month?

Yes, if you rent outside the prime south and CBD, eat mostly local food and get around by bus and ojek. A central apartment, cafe habit and regular nights out push it well past that.

  • Is Jakarta cheaper than Bali?

On rent, usually not: Jakarta's prime-district apartments cost more than most of Bali. Everyday local food and transport are similar and cheap in both. Bali charges a tourist premium in areas like Canggu, while Jakarta charges a big-city one.

  • What costs do people forget when budgeting for Jakarta?

The up-front rent is the big one: many landlords want six or twelve months at signing. After that it is health insurance, visa costs, and how fast cafe and mall spending grows. Long commutes also nudge people toward pricier central rent.

  • Do you need a scooter in Jakarta?

No, and most people advise against renting one. The traffic is intense and short-term rentals for foreigners are rare, so the city runs on the MRT, TransJakarta and Gojek or Grab. The calculator budgets that rather than a scooter.
