Sri Lanka Visa Guide

The main Sri Lanka visas explained, with the official fee for each, so you never pay an agent for something you can do yourself.

Every common Sri Lanka visa explained

Almost every visitor needs an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter Sri Lanka, and for many it is now free. Since 25 May 2026, citizens of 40 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, India, China and much of Europe, pay nothing for a 30-day tourist ETA. Most other passports pay US$50, while Bangladesh and Bhutan pay the South Asian rate of US$20. Either way, you apply online before you fly. Pick your passport in the checker below to see what you pay.

Apply only on the official government site. A privately run e-visa system replaced it for a few months in 2024, until the Supreme Court suspended the deal, so older articles may send you to the wrong place. Here are the main routes, with the stay, the official fee and where to apply for each.

Tourist travel

Every foreign visitor needs an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for a tourist stay of up to 30 days, and since 25 May 2026 it has been free for 40 nationalities. Apply only on eta.gov.lk. Sites that charge a service fee are middlemen you do not need.

The free ETA is a fee waiver, not visa-free entry: you still apply on eta.gov.lk and wait for approval before you travel. Children under 12 get a free tourist ETA whatever their nationality.

Tourist ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization)

Most popular

Almost every tourist, applied for online before the trip

Stay
30 days, double entry
Official cost
Free to US$50

The ETA is a short online form: passport details, travel dates and where you are staying. You pay by card if a fee applies, and approval arrives by email, so apply at least a few days before you fly. The tourist ETA lets you stay 30 days from the day you arrive, with a second entry allowed inside the same 30 days, and you must enter within three months of approval.

It covers sightseeing, visiting friends and family, yoga and Ayurveda retreats, and medical treatment, but not work of any kind. Your passport must be valid for six months from arrival, and immigration can ask for a return or onward ticket and proof that you can pay for your stay.

What each passport pays Free for 40 countries, US$20 or US$50 for the rest

Passports not shown below pay US$50 for the tourist ETA. The fee waiver was approved for one year with a review after six months, so check the official site before you rely on it. The last group can't use the online ETA and needs a Sri Lankan sponsor to apply at the immigration head office.

ETA on Arrival

Travelers who land without an approved ETA

Stay
30 days
Official cost
US$60 (US$25 SAARC)

Sri Lanka still sells the tourist ETA at a counter in the arrivals hall at Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport, which is what most people mean by a Sri Lanka visa on arrival. It gives the same 30-day stay as the online version.

The immigration department calls it a limited facility and tells travelers to get the ETA before they arrive. In October 2025 it briefly made the online ETA compulsory before departure, then dropped the rule within days. Check the current rules before you fly.

Who can use it Most nationalities, as a fallback

Sold at Bandaranaike International Airport as a limited facility. Nationalities on the sponsor list can't use it, and there is no business ETA on arrival.

  • Airlines may ask for your ETA at check-in. Some want to see an approval before you board. Apply online and the question never comes up.

Tourist Visa Extension

Visitors who want to stay longer than 30 days

Stay
Up to 270 days (180 for US citizens)
Official cost
US$60 to US$200

You extend inside Sri Lanka, either online on the immigration department's e-services site or in person at its head office in Battaramulla, on the edge of Colombo. You need your passport, a photo, a return ticket and the address where you are staying, and your passport has to stay valid for at least two months beyond the new end date.

Extensions come in stages, up to 270 days from the day you arrived for most nationalities. If an online application gets no answer, go to Battaramulla within three working days, because an online attempt doesn't protect you from overstay fines.

Who can extend Tourist ETA holders already in Sri Lanka

Apply before your current ETA expires. Transit ETAs can't be extended, and business visas can't be extended online.

  • An extension cancels your second entry. If you leave the country during an extended stay, the extension ends and you need a new ETA to come back.
  • Apply through the official site only. The immigration department ignores extension applications made through other websites.

Business ETA

Meetings, conferences and short training trips

Stay
30 days
Official cost
US$55 (US$30 SAARC)

A business ETA isn't issued through the online tourist form. You apply through a Sri Lankan embassy or high commission, or at the immigration head office in Colombo, with a letter that shows the purpose of the trip.

It allows 30 days at first and can be extended to 180 days: US$100 up to day 90 and US$200 beyond that for most nationalities, or US$100 for the whole extension for US citizens. It isn't a work permit: a job in Sri Lanka, even an unpaid one, needs a residence visa sponsored by a Sri Lankan employer.

Who it covers Short business visits with proof of purpose

For meetings, negotiations, conferences, workshops and short training. It doesn't allow paid work. Journalists, NGO workers and anyone attending a political event need separate government approval.

  • Don't enter on a tourist ETA for business. The purpose on your ETA has to match what you do in Sri Lanka.

Digital Nomad Visa

Digital nomad

Remote workers and freelancers paid from abroad

Stay
1 year
Official cost
US$500 a year

Sri Lanka launched its Digital Nomad Visa in February 2026. It is a one-year residence visa, renewable each year, for people whose income comes from outside the country. You apply to the Department of Immigration and Emigration with a recommendation from the Ministry of Digital Economy, police and medical clearance, and international health insurance.

Local work isn't allowed, and renewing the visa requires registering with the Inland Revenue Department. Most remote workers base themselves in Colombo, Galle or the south-coast surf towns.

Taxes are the part to plan for. Spend 183 days or more in Sri Lanka in any 12-month period and you become tax resident, so your worldwide income is taxable there at rates up to 36%. Since April 2025, income from services for foreign clients, paid in foreign currency and brought in through a Sri Lankan bank, is taxed at no more than 15%, and tax you have already paid abroad can be credited against the bill. How salaried remote work is treated, and what your home country still expects, is worth settling with a tax adviser before you apply.

Who qualifies Remote workers aged 18+ with foreign income

For people aged 18 or over who work remotely for a foreign employer, freelance for clients outside Sri Lanka, or run a business registered abroad. A spouse and dependents can be included.

  • It is new. It launched in 2026 and the document list is long, so check the current requirements with the immigration department before you apply.

Golden Paradise Visa

Residency

Investors and families with capital to deposit

Stay
10 years
Official cost
US$2,000 for 10 years

The Golden Paradise Visa is a 10-year investor residence visa that covers your spouse and dependents. It isn't a retirement visa, but since the My Dream Home retirement scheme closed to new applicants, it is the main long-stay route for people who can place a large deposit.

The deposit goes into a dedicated foreign-currency account at a licensed commercial bank. After the first year you can withdraw up to half of it, and the money can also go into approved investments such as condominiums. Buying a condominium is a separate route to a five- or 10-year visa, depending on its price and location.

The visa doesn't change your tax position by itself. What counts is time: 183 days or more in Sri Lanka in any 12-month period makes you tax resident, and residents are taxed on worldwide income at rates up to 36%, with credit for tax paid abroad. Get tax advice on the deposit and your other income before you move.

Who qualifies Anyone who can place the deposit

Open to foreign investors, with their spouse and dependents, who deposit at least US$200,000 in a licensed Sri Lankan commercial bank. A separate investor visa gives five years for US$100,000 placed in approved shares, bonds, deposits or property.

  • There are two investor routes. Golden Paradise needs US$200,000. The separate investor visa starts at US$100,000 for five years, or US$200,000 for 10. Confirm which route you are applying for before you transfer money.

Residence Visa for Spouses

Foreign husbands and wives of Sri Lankan citizens

Stay
1 year, then 2 years at a time
Official cost
Free

The spouse residence visa is issued at the immigration head office. The first visa lasts a year, renewals run two years at a time until you reach five years, and after that five years at a time.

Once you have been married for five years, you can apply for the Permanent Residence Visa introduced in 2024, which comes with a card valid for 10 years. Former Sri Lankan citizens and people of Sri Lankan descent can apply for it under their own categories.

Who qualifies Spouses married for at least six months

For the non-Sri Lankan spouse of a Sri Lankan citizen, married for at least six months, plus dependent children.

  • Plan for an interview. Applications are handled at the head office in Battaramulla, and the Sri Lankan spouse has to attend an interview there.

Employment Residence Visa

People with a job offer from a Sri Lankan employer

Stay
1 year
Official cost
US$200 a year

To work in Sri Lanka you need an employment residence visa. Your employer applies for it at the immigration head office, after getting a recommendation from the relevant ministry or the Board of Investment, and it is issued for a year at a time and tied to that job.

There is no route to apply on your own, and no work is allowed on a tourist ETA or the digital nomad visa. Students follow a similar route, with a university or approved school as the sponsor.

Who qualifies Employees with a sponsoring employer

Only through a sponsor: Board of Investment companies, approved projects, banks, private companies with a recommendation from their ministry, and registered NGOs. You can't apply on your own.

Overstaying and fines

Sri Lanka fines overstays in steps, and after two weeks the penalty is steep. If your time is running out, extend before your ETA expires rather than after.

  • Up to 7 days over: you pay the visa fee for the extra days at the airport when you leave, with no penalty on top.
  • 8 to 14 days over: a US$250 penalty plus the visa fee.
  • More than 14 days over: a US$500 penalty plus the visa fee.
  • Overstaying can also mean detention. The UK government warns that overstayers can be detained, deported at their own cost or refused entry in future.
  • Extend before your ETA expires. Apply online or in Battaramulla. Most nationalities can reach 270 days in total, US citizens 180.
  • Carry proof of onward travel. Immigration can ask for a return or onward ticket and proof of funds when you arrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do US citizens need a visa for Sri Lanka?

US citizens need an ETA, but it is currently free, because the US is one of the 40 countries covered by the fee waiver in force since 25 May 2026. Apply on eta.gov.lk before you fly. It gives a 30-day stay. Extensions cost US citizens US$100 up to day 90 and US$200 up to day 180.

  • Do UK citizens need a visa for Sri Lanka?

Yes, an ETA, and it is currently free for British passport holders. It gives 30 days from arrival. To stay longer, the first extension costs UK citizens US$100 and takes you to 90 days, then US$150 to day 180 and US$200 to day 270.

  • Do Indian citizens need a visa for Sri Lanka?

Indian citizens need an ETA, which is currently free under the 40-country waiver. India was also part of an earlier free-visa pilot for seven countries. Apply on eta.gov.lk, the same site as everyone else.

  • Can I get a visa on arrival in Sri Lanka?

Yes, as a fallback. The ETA counter at Colombo airport sells a 30-day tourist ETA for US$60, or US$25 for South Asian passports. It costs more than applying online, and some airlines want to see an approved ETA before you board, so apply in advance.

  • How long can I stay in Sri Lanka as a tourist?

30 days on the ETA, then up to 270 days in total with extensions for most nationalities (180 days for US citizens). You extend inside the country, online or at the immigration head office in Battaramulla, and pay per stage, from US$60 to US$200 depending on your nationality and how long you stay.

  • Does Sri Lanka have a retirement visa?

Not for new applicants. The My Dream Home visa, which was aimed at retirees, now only renews existing holders. Retirees with savings can look at the Golden Paradise Visa instead, a 10-year investor residence visa that needs a US$200,000 bank deposit.
