Cost of living in Bangkok

Set your lifestyle, household size and neighborhood to see what a month in Bangkok could cost. It uses the Bangkok prices listed below.

What a month in Bangkok costs

A month in Bangkok swings on two things: which side of the city you rent in, and how often you trade street food for a mall or a rooftop bar. A room out by the MRT with market meals is cheap. A Thonglor condo with a pool and a nightly social life is a different number.

Food is where Bangkok stays honestly cheap. A plate of street food is a dollar or two, often better than the restaurant version. A flat white in a Sukhumvit cafe costs more than three of those plates, so the coffee habit is what creeps up.

The calculator uses the Bangkok prices listed below. Set your lifestyle, household size and neighborhood, and the monthly total updates.

Rent in Bangkok by area

Rent moves the total more than anything else. These neighborhoods run from pricier to cheaper than the city average. The multipliers are our own estimates from local listings, so treat them as a rough guide:

  • Thonglor / Phrom Phong Pricier Thonglor and Phrom Phong are the heart of expat and nomad Bangkok, with the best bars and cafes and rents to match. A modern one-bed here is well above the city average.
  • Sathorn / Silom Pricier Sathorn and Silom are Bangkok's financial district, so rents sit above average and the towers are newer. Good transport links, quieter after office hours.
  • Ari / Phaya Thai Mid Ari has become the quiet favorite: tree-lined streets, independent cafes and rents a little above average but below Thonglor. It stays more Thai than the Sukhumvit core.
  • Ratchada / Huai Khwang Cheaper Ratchada and Huai Khwang give you MRT access and lower rents than Sukhumvit, plus some of the city's best night markets. Less polished, better value.
  • On Nut / Bang Na Cheaper On Nut and further out toward Bang Na trade a longer ride into town for noticeably cheaper condos, which is why a lot of long-stay nomads end up here.
  • Old Town (Rattanakosin) Cheaper The old town around Rattanakosin is the most local option, with low rents and no high-rises, but you give up the Skytrain and the modern-condo comforts.

Is Bangkok expensive?

Bangkok is cheap for rent, street food and getting around, and close to home prices for imported groceries, alcohol and anything in a mall. Most of the extra spending comes from cafes, bars and eating Western rather than from rent.

A comfortable month here costs far less than the same life in a mid-size US, UK or Australian city. It lands a little below Bali and around the bigger Vietnamese cities, and it is one of the better-value big cities in the region. For the wider picture, see the Thailand cost of living page.

Sending money to Bangkok

If your income is abroad, you are converting to baht for rent and daily spending. A weak rate plus a transfer fee can cost 3 to 5% each time, which adds up against what you save on street food.

Thai landlords usually want two months deposit plus the first month up front, by bank transfer or cash, so a cheap way to move money pays off early. Check what you would receive today, then the full Thailand money guide covers ATMs, cards and PromptPay.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How much do you need per month to live in Bangkok?

For one person, plan on about $710 for a basic setup, $1,470 for a comfortable digital-nomad month with a condo and coworking, and $2,310 for a high-floor pool-condo lifestyle. Set your own household size, neighborhood and currency in the calculator above.

  • Can you live in Bangkok on $1,000 a month?

Yes, if you rent outside prime Sukhumvit, eat mostly Thai food and use the train or a scooter. It gets tight once you add a central condo, daily cafe coffees and regular nights out.

  • Is Bangkok cheaper than Chiang Mai?

On rent they are close, and Bangkok has the cheaper street food of the two. Chiang Mai wins on coworking and quiet, and on smaller everyday costs. Bangkok gives you the big-city job market, transport and nightlife for a similar rent.

  • What costs do people forget when budgeting for Bangkok?

Health insurance and visa runs or extensions are the usual misses. After that it is how fast a social life adds up in Thonglor, and the two-month deposit on a condo. Air quality in the dry-season burning months is not a line item, but it pushes some people to travel out for a while.

  • Do you need a scooter in Bangkok?

Less than in most of Thailand. The BTS Skytrain and MRT cover the central areas, and ride-hailing fills the gaps cheaply. A scooter helps in the outer neighborhoods, but the traffic is heavy, so plenty of people skip it. The Basic and Digital Nomad settings assume a scooter or the train; Luxury uses taxis.
