Best time to visit Sri Lanka.

It depends on the coast. The southwest monsoon lasts from May to September and brings rain to Colombo, the south coast and the western side of the hills. The northeast monsoon lasts from December to February and brings rain to the north and east. The east coast starts getting more rain in October, and it is heaviest in November and December, with November the wettest month. By February Trincomalee is dry again. Jaffna and the far north follow the same pattern.

Between the monsoons come two inter-monsoon periods. March and April are hot, with afternoon thunderstorms, mostly in the southwest and the hills. October and November bring the most widespread rain of the year, and landslides are most likely in the hills then. Even the dry months have some rain: Colombo still averages five rain days in January.

A monsoon month on the south coast usually means heavy showers and gray afternoons rather than rain all day. Sea conditions matter more: from May the swell makes swimming risky on many south-coast beaches, and whale watching from Mirissa becomes much less reliable.

What each part of the year looks like in the places most visitors go.

• December. The south and west start to dry out and the beach season begins. The east coast and the hills around Ella are still wet. Christmas and New Year are the most expensive weeks of the year, and many resorts charge a compulsory gala dinner on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.
• January to March. The best weather for Colombo, Galle and Kandy, with five to eight rain days a month. This is also the busiest and priciest stretch. In Nuwara Eliya, clear nights can leave frost on the ground.
• April. Hot, with afternoon storms returning to the west and the hills. Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid-April closes many small businesses for several days. The east coast season is starting.
• May and June. Monsoon on the west and south coasts, and among the quietest months for visitors, with about half as many arrivals as December. The east coast is dry, and the Arugam Bay surf season is under way.
• July and August. A second busy season, driven by European summer holidays. The east coast is at its best, though Trincomalee is very hot, and the Kandy Esala Perahera usually falls in one of these months.
• September. Quiet, and the east coast is still dry. Check Yala closure dates if a safari is on your list.
• October and November. The wettest stretch of the year across most of the island. Rooms are cheap, but landslides can close hill roads, and the sea on the east coast gets rough.

Whale watching is best when the sea is calm, which on each coast means its dry months. Off Mirissa on the south coast, boats go out from about November to April, and December to March is the most reliable stretch for blue whales. Off Trincomalee on the east coast, the season is roughly March to September, with May to August the best months.

Some boats still go out in the other months, but the sea is rougher and sightings are less reliable.

Most national parks stay open all year, and the dry months are best for sightings because the bush thins out and animals stay close to the remaining water. At Minneriya, hundreds of elephants come to graze on the fresh grass of the drying reservoir bed from about July to October, with the biggest herds in August and September. Udawalawe has elephants in every month, so go there if your dates miss Minneriya.

Yala is the park people go to for leopards. It usually closes its two busiest blocks for about a month from mid-September, while the outer blocks stay open, and the park announces the dates each year.

Surfing follows the same split as the rain. The main surf season is November to April on the south and west coasts, and May to October on the east coast. The water is warm all year, so you will not need a wetsuit, though reef boots help on the rocky breaks.

Arugam Bay on the east coast is the best-known surf spot in Sri Lanka. Its main point is a long right-hand break for experienced surfers, and nearby spots such as Whiskey Point and Elephant Rock are easier on smaller days. The best waves come from July to September, which is also when the town is busiest.

On the south coast, Weligama has a long sandy bay with gentle waves and dozens of surf schools, which makes it the easiest place to learn. Hiriketiya is a small, sheltered bay with a gentle beach break and a reef break, and Midigama has reef breaks that suit intermediate surfers and up.

Most of Sri Lanka's festivals follow the full moon. Every full-moon day, called Poya, is a public holiday, and shops and bars stop selling alcohol; larger hotels can still serve their own guests. Poya dates move with the lunar calendar, so check the upcoming holidays before you fix your dates.

• Kandy Esala Perahera. Ten nights of processions with drummers, dancers and decorated elephants in Kandy, usually in July or August. Rooms in Kandy sell out and prices jump, so book months ahead.
• Sinhala and Tamil New Year. The biggest family holiday of the year, on 13 and 14 April. Many family-run restaurants and guesthouses close for several days, and trains and buses out of Colombo are packed beforehand.
• Vesak. The May full moon, which marks the birth, enlightenment and death of the Buddha. Towns hang lanterns, and roadside stalls called dansal hand out free food and drinks.
• Adam's Peak pilgrimage. The season lasts from the December full moon to Vesak in May. The path up Sri Pada is lit through the night, the tea stalls are open, and Poya days and weekends bring the biggest crowds.

October and November. Colombo, Galle, Kandy, Ella and Trincomalee all have their wettest month of the year in one of the two, and the heavy rain brings landslides in the hills. Cyclone Ditwah hit in late November 2025, killed hundreds of people and badly damaged the hill-country railway, parts of which were still being repaired in 2026.

• May to September on the south coast, if you came to swim. Rough sea makes swimming risky on many beaches and whale trips from Mirissa much less reliable, though sightseeing on land carries on.
• November to January on the east coast. Trincomalee and Arugam Bay are wet, the sea is rough, and many guesthouses close.
• Christmas and New Year, if you are on a budget. It is the busiest and most expensive fortnight on the south coast.

May and June. Visitor numbers are among the lowest of the year, and south-coast rooms drop well below their winter rates. The east coast is dry in those months, so you can pair low prices with good weather in Trincomalee or Arugam Bay before their own busy season starts in July.
